SHARPES' "Scottie"
Bamboo Fishing Rods : |
Sharpes' "Scottie" rod was
first acclaimed at the Milan Exhibition of 1933 where
Sharpes was awarded the
Gold medal and Diploma. Traditions of excellence have been maintained to this
day and the "Scottie" trademark is still internationally recognised for top
quality impregnated Bamboo rods.
Sharpes' founded over 70 years ago by John Shepherd Sharpe of Aberdeen in Scotland, pioneered the process for impregnating the fibres of the
built cane blank to repel water using procedures followed to impregnate the airframe of early aircraft. The impregnation techniques, key to the life and handling of the finished rod, were further improved by Harold Sharpe, when he took over the business in 1946. |
| Now based in
workshops in London, England, S & J Tackle continue to produce it's
"Scottie" range of top quality
Bamboo rods, both for fly fishing and coarse fishing in the shape of blanks and finished rods under the supervision of John and Steve Weaver.
Today, Sharpes' unique impregnation process involves the immersion of the
blank in a bath of specially prepared resins for a period of weeks until the fibres are properly saturated. the impregnated blank is then "cured" by baking the blank in an oven at a controlled temperature. This fixes the resins in the cane fibres making them waterproof. The finished
rod is lighter, requires no varnish except for the wraps and is easy to maintain because it is waterproofed.
Rod building remains very much a craftsman's art at
S & J Tackle with much of the original equipment still in use. All of the
rod assembly, fine polishing and finishing are still carried out by hand. Even the fittings for "Scottie"
rods are engineered by hand in the London workshops.
Modern synthetic glues have superseded the old organic types offering stronger adhesion and a permanent bond, modern varnishes used on the wraps are finer and tougher than earlier preparations, otherwise little has changed in the making of a "Scottie" cane
rod. Only the finest Tonkin cane is selected. The tapered cane strips from which the blanks are constructed are still milled on one of the original Aberdeen "mills". The accuracy of the mill produces a precise and perfectly uniform cut which ensures that the tapers are constant throughout and the glued surfaces are perfectly flush throughout their length so there can be no weak spots. Today's rod tapers remain true to the original "Scottie" designs from the 1920s.
| Crafted today to
the standards of a bygone age and protected by a unique impregnation
process, a "Scottie"
Bamboo fly rod can be expected to provide it's owner with a lifetime of first class trouble free service, a lot of fun and an heirloom for future generations.
The "Scottie" and
Sharpes' trademarks are owned by John Weaver and all of our rods carry a lifetime guarantee for the original owner only.
